The Root of All Kinds of Evil

A quick Look at 1 Timothy 6 verse 10

Chapter 1

The Root of All Kinds of Evil

Matthew Akinola

Welcome to today's episode of Eternal Words. am Matthew. I'm so glad you're here. So, let me ask you—have you ever heard a story about someone who seemed to have everything they could possibly want, but still found themselves unhappy and still want more? You know, like someone who chased money so fervently that, in the end, they lost sight of what truly mattered? There's a lot of wisdom in stories like these, and they resonate with something we've been taught for thousands of years. The Holy Spirit told me this while teaching Sunday School that no one has everything more than everyone, if you are richer than everybody somebody is smarter than you, If you are smarter than everyone someone is more handsome or more beautiful or more patient or more versatile or stronger see where am going with this? you cannot have everything more than everyone, that is a fact. Think about that for a moment.

Now, I want us to take a moment to reflect on a verse from 1 Timothy, chapter 6, verse 10. It says, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." You’ve probably heard this verse quoted before—and honestly, it's one of those phrases that sticks. But why? What does it really mean?

Matthew Akinola

You see, it's not saying that money itself is the problem. Money is, well, it's neutral. It's a tool we use to live, to help others, to build communities. The issue arises when that 'love' for money—a desire that's unchecked, and consuming—takes root in our hearts. It’s when this desire grows beyond need and turns into greed, driving us to make choices that harm not only ourselves but also the people around us. Have you ever seen anyone buried with their possessions, their cars, houses, pieces of jewelry, and even the ones that were buried with pieces of jewelry got robbed. You can't sleep in two bedrooms at a time, you can't eat more than your stomach limit or else you will throw up, you can't drive two cars at the same time and even in a convoy you can only be in one of the cars so please tell me why you would lose relationships over the love of money or miss eternity because of it.

Matthew Akinola

When we put money at the center of our lives, it can lead to all sorts of consequences. And notice the language here—it says "Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith." It’s not money that causes this wandering; it’s that consuming eagerness, that desperation, that shifts our focus away from God, away from the things that actually bring joy and purpose. And what’s the result? Grief,—grief that we bring upon ourselves, often without realizing it until it’s too late.

Matthew Akinola

So, what do we do with this? Well, I think it's an invitation to reflect on our relationship with money, to pause and ask ourselves: is it a tool that helps us fulfill our purpose, or has it become a master that controls us? It’s a challenge, really, to prioritize what matters most, to choose fulfillment over fleeting desires, to hand over our needs and wants and concerns to Jesus. Philippians 4 verse 19 says , let's trust Jesus for all our needs and he will sort us out. If you are yet to accept Jesus as your lord and savior please do so today, that’s where we’ll leave it today, On the next episode we will look at a similar verse of the scripture Luke 12 verse 15 please read ahead and drop your thoughts in the comment section. Thank you for spending this time with me, and I hope this stayed with you as much as it has with me. Please subscribe and share with friends and family. take care and God bless.
