Finding God in our Everyday (2 Kings 6:5-7)

Chapter 1

Finding God in our Everyday (2 Kings 6:5-7)

Matthew Akinola

Hello welcome to another episode of Eternal Words, am Matthew. When you think about everyday life, do you ever wonder if God is involved in the little, ordinary things? You know, it's easy to feel that God is present in the big moments, the mountaintop experiences, but what about when life feels small or routine? Today, we’re reflecting on a rather unusual story from 2 Kings 6:5-7. It's the story of a lost axe head—a story that, at first glance, might seem trivial. But, as we’ll discover, there’s so much more going on here.

Matthew Akinola

So, let me set the scene. Elisha, the prophet, is with a group of prophets who are working near the Jordan River to build a bigger meeting place. One of them is using a borrowed axe, and as he chops, the iron axe head suddenly flies off and sinks into the river. He panics. I mean, you would too, wouldn’t you? It's not like it belonged to him; it was borrowed. Back then, iron tools were costly and not easily replaceable. So, this wasn’t just a minor inconvenience—it was a big deal. Like this young prophet, ours might be losing a job, making a bad decision, feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities, and struggling with sin. These “lost axe head” moments can leave us feeling helpless. The question is, What do we do in those moments of loss and desperation? Do we wallow in self-pity? Do we try to fix it all ourselves? or do we act wisely like the young prophet and call for help?

Now, Elisha steps in. And here’s the part that I think is so profound. Elisha doesn’t give the man a lecture about being more careful. He doesn’t tell him, “Well, it’s just an axe; move on.” Instead, he asks, “Where did it fall?” And when the man shows him, Elisha throws a stick into the water, and miraculously, the axe head floats. Isn’t that remarkable? I mean, it’s such a small-scale miracle, but it tells us something crucial about God, He doesn't always prevent the loss, but He offers a way to redeem it.

What I think this story underscores is how God is deeply, deeply interested in the details of our lives. It’s not just about the grand, history-changing events; it’s about the lost axe heads too, the moments when we feel overwhelmed or afraid, the parts of our day we might think are too insignificant to bring before Him. You know, I'll be honest—I find that deeply comforting. It’s a reminder that God's care isn’t limited to the big stuff; He’s present in the every day, in the mundane, in our frustrations and our fears.

Practically speaking, this story encourages us to pay attention. To ask ourselves: Do we take the time to ask for God's help in the small things? Do we pause long enough to invite Him into our lost moments—whether that’s a lost key, a lost temper, or even, metaphorically, a lost sense of purpose? Because I believe, truly, that when we do, what we often find is that God is right there, ready to help us, ready to lift the iron out of the water, so to speak.

So, as we reflect on this today, let’s remember: that God is not distant or detached. He’s not just the God of parted seas or fire from heaven. He’s also the God who cares about a sunken axe head. And if He cares about that, how much more does He care about you and me, and even the smallest details of our lives? Jesus wants us to bring our losses, big and small, to him. He wants to hear our cries, to know our needs, and to work miracles in our lives. Are you preparing for an interview, don't know what to eat, the right clothes to wear anything don't let anyone dictate to you what to say or not to say to Jesus, he is our Father, savior, and friend so today"Let it all out—every joy, every sorrow, every wild thought swirling in your heart. Whisper, shout, sing, or just sit in silence—Jesus hears it all. No filter, no holding back. Whether it's gratitude, frustration, dreams, or doubts, He’s all ears. Go ahead, pour it out. He can handle it. please bring everything to him and trust me he will show up and your lost axe head will float in Jesus' name.

And that’s all for today. Thank you for spending this time with me as we explored this passage together. Please share with friends, and family and subscribe if you haven't already. Until next time, stay blessed.
